Development of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) is attributable to the introduction of atomic emission spectroscopy (AES), which led to the development of the Atomic Spectrophotometer (AAS). Eventually, AAS became an integral part of Atomic and Molecular Physics by providing a simple and rapid method for elemental and isotope analysis. It provides the earliest, simplest and most powerful method for the determination of the atomic composition and isotope ratio of solids, liquids, gases, and even aerosols.

AAS can be used as an auxiliary technique for the determination of trace elements in aqueous and non-aqueous liquids, through highly optimized direct or indirect methods. It is in fact the most common method employed to determine the concentration of common elements, such as iron, aluminum, magnesium, potassium, calcium, etc.

AAS is generally of two types: the flame AAS or the portable AAS. When the atomic emission spectrophotometer is used to determine the concentration of an element, the medium is exposed to an intense flame, the flame source is a flame AAS. When the portable AAS is used to determine the concentration of an element, the medium is exposed to the sample flame, usually equipped with a radiant tube. It is a common misconception that Atomic absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) is similar to Atomic Fluorescence Spectrophotometry (AFS) due to the appearance of both these methods. Although the underlying principle is the same, the techniques involved and the way they are applied are completely different from each other. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, though similar to Atomic Fluorescence, is an entirely different technique for elemental analysis and determination of the concentration of atoms in a sample. A Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer has an inbuilt light source of the flame which emits a spectrum of light. As the sample is exposed to this flame, the atoms in the sample absorb a portion of the light that passes through it, thereby giving the sample a characteristic spectrum of light that resembles a rainbow. By matching the characteristic spectrum of the sample to a known spectrum of a set of standards, a measurement of the concentration of the element can be easily obtained. In a Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, the radiation is filtered using a set of filters. A matching filter is selected depending on the atom whose concentration is being measured.
