AutoCAD was intended to replace many of the functions previously provided by two competing desktop-based computer-aided design (CAD) applications, namely Drafting and Graphics. It was developed in response to the growing use of mini and microcomputers by the mainstream business market, and competed directly with a high-end microcomputer-based CAD program, John Madden’s BTA. AutoCAD was the first true CAD program to be sold to the mass market. It was designed to be easy to use, requiring no technical training. The software was based on a 2D object-oriented database system, which enabled it to automatically perform functions on geometrical data, and automatically recalculate when data was changed.
AutoCAD is a legacy product. In 2016, it accounted for 68% of the US CAD market and 12% of the global CAD market. In 2017, its market share was still 68% in the US and 12% in the global CAD market, according to Gartner.
AutoCAD was designed by Ray Duncan and his team at Autodesk. It was first released for use on December 4, 1982, by Nippon Chemi-Con Corporation (NCC) as the software product of its E&D department, with the plan to promote it as a system to streamline and automate drafting work. The first commercial version, AutoCAD 2.0, was released in April 1983 for the Apple II, Atari 800 and Commodore 64 (C64). The first version to run on a microcomputer, an 80286 PC-compatible computer, was AutoCAD 3.0 in July 1983. In November 1984 the Macintosh version of AutoCAD was released.
When released, it was the first CAD program to be released for personal computers. It also included the first mouse support and the first line style. AutoCAD 2.0 was developed by three programmers: Rudy Graham, Mike Boyle, and Mark Baker.
The name “AutoCAD” originated from a mis-spelling of “automatic drawing,” originally intended to be called “AutoDraw” when the name was first proposed to the NCC. The NCC objected to the auto- prefix because that word was associated with the car. A reviewer at the time said “The word Auto is appropriately fitting for a piece of mechanical engineering equipment. It is the gift of a German instrument maker. The ‘CAD’ portion of the name is taken

Autocad allows the simultaneous editing of any instance of the same drawing and is able to handle design changes to an entire drawing concurrently.
Since version 2012, Autocad uses a different graphic engine for its model, symbols, and camera views. The original Graphics Design Application (graphics.dll) was replaced by the Geometry Engine.
Starting in AutoCAD 2007, the AutoCAD user interface (UI) became based on the.NET Framework, using Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Microsoft Silverlight, and some parts of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). The new UI works in a similar fashion as in previous versions. All objects used in AutoCAD, such as the ribbon, toolbars, menus, etc. are present, however, with new additional features.
The ribbon became the default user interface, which is mostly composed of toolbars. At the left side of the screen there are five main toolbars: Home, Selection, Zoom, View, and Drawing. A number of additional toolbars are present on the right side of the screen, some are hidden by default and the user must enable them. These include some panning, some zooming, Draft View, Properties View, and a number of others. A number of tabs are present in the ribbon, each tab is connected to a specific object of AutoCAD, such as Data Management, Blocks, etc. Some items are common to all of the objects, such as the Drawing and the Data Management tab, however, the others are specific to each object.
Although the ribbon is still the main and default user interface for new releases of AutoCAD, a number of new features are available in the current version. Among them are the ability to work on several drawings simultaneously, as well as to share drawings among multiple users. The most recent version, AutoCAD LT 2012, uses a similar layout as in previous versions.
AutoCAD was initially developed as Digital Design, a product of Autodesk, to replace an earlier product Autodesk DGN. Later, DGN was replaced by DGN 2, which led to Autocad 2. In 1992, Autodesk released AutoCAD, version 1.0. It featured a variable block size for lines and blocks, and a command line for creating drawings. Version 1.5 included a new command line, faster print capability, variable-block blocks, a user interface for drawing floors

What’s New in the AutoCAD?
These changes are visible on-screen as you import the markings. The changes are committed to the drawing and will be incorporated the next time you save the drawing. Import Markups lets you quickly get feedback on your designs. It makes it easy to incorporate changes made by users who have attended your presentations or have read your articles.
Import from any document format:
AutoCAD’s new Markup Import technology makes it easy to capture and combine information from a wide variety of documents in a single Drawing Markup.
Find exactly what you need:
Use the new PDF Viewer to create interactive views of documents. Add fields to your PDFs that you can use to sort and search. Make it easy for users to create and attach comments and other information that they find helpful.
Automate security checks:
Automatically check for new, modified, and deleted drawings in the recent-changes file. Automatically upload data from associated files and/or the clipboard and associate that data with the drawing.
Convert to and from other file formats:
Import to or export from any drawing, DXF, DWG, or DWF format. (These formats represent the most common file formats in use today.)
Use the AutoCAD Pen to annotate your drawings and drawings you import with freeform text. You can draw text directly on the fly and use the AutoCAD Pen tool to fill it in, or draw text automatically and attach it directly to your drawing. Text can also be added or annotated in a drawing from other file formats.
Capture images of drawings from the web or other images from your computer, automatically place them into the active drawing, and update the image to the appropriate scale.
Embed Dynamic Annotations:
Update your own custom annotations to the active drawing. Embed the annotations into the drawing instead of a marker icon. They will always be visible and will update on the screen.
Work with PDFs:
Add, link, and edit PDF annotations, and they are automatically exported to the active drawing. You can also create your own PDF annotations and attach them to the drawing.
Easily integrate other CAD software:
Attach drawings from other programs and work with them together. Automatically update the drawings when you change the other drawings.
Add alignment lines to your drawings automatically.
System Requirements For AutoCAD:

“Well, I guess I was a little slow there. Here, have this.
You know, there are a lot of things we don’t understand about the world. Why some people can’t just get along? Why the starlight falls from the sky?
